Burlington Beach Master Plan

A master plan that captures the natural beauty and unique ecosystem of Burlington Beach

Halton Region, in conjunction with the City of Burlington and Conservation Halton, commissioned Brook McIlroy (with SENES and Cole Engineering) to prepare a Master Plan for Burlington Beach – approximately 35 hectares of waterfront in the heart of Downtown Burlington. The plan will result in a premier waterfront park that protects and enhances the existing dynamic beach and dune ecosystem, while integrating new uses and facilities that support a Regional and City-wide destination.

The master plan will leverage the natural beauty of the beach through enhancements to the beach and dunes, an attractive and safe circulation network, application of best practices in low-impact parking, and the provision of light imprint structures nestled into the natural fabric, including washrooms, picnic areas, rental facilities, and shade structures. A key objective of the plan is to establish Burlington Beach as a safe and vibrant year-round destination that meets the needs of its users, while protecting and celebrating the natural environment through design, education, and interpretation. As the majority of the area is comprised of sensitive natural features, the plan will rely on the thoughtful and efficient placement of attractive, light-imprint structures with flexibility to accommodate seasonal uses (such as shade structures, warming stations, and seasonal rentals).

As the master plan is developed, a supporting Environmental Management Plan will outline recommendations to ensure the protection, restoration, and sustainable use of the natural heritage resources.
