A full refresh of educational spaces for LDSB students and staff
Brook McIlroy led a major series of renovations and additions to Westgate Collegiate and Vocational Institute, a one of the three secondary schools for the Lakehead District School Board in Thunder Bay. The project updated and created additional facilities for an influx of students expected following the merger of Westgate and Churchill C&VI. Additions to the building include a new cafetorium, kitchen and drama room, and an expanded staff room. Interior upgrades include renovations to the library, staff room, central office, student services area, exercise rooms, tech workshops and offices. The project will also include an integrated landscaping design providing new parking, building access points and a kiss-and-go drop-off area.
This project posed many challenges related to renovating and expanding an existing building. As prime consultant for the project, Brook McIlroy led a team of engineers and in-house landscape architects to develop solutions that tied seamlessly into the existing site and building. Our team worked closely with the LDSB to develop a tender process and construction schedule that allowed the work to take place within a compressed construction timeline. Construction was divided in phases to allow the school facilities to remain open with minimal disruption to classes. The school opened for students September 2019.
