An innovative and comprehensive vision for campus buildings and open spaces

Brook McIlroy is currently leading a multi- disciplinary team to develop an updated Campus Master Plan for the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM), which will establish a long-term vision for buildings and open space. UTM’s natural setting on the Credit River is central to campus identity, place-making, and by extension, the health of the campus community.

The Campus Master Plan will result in area-wide and site-specific urban design guidelines to inform the future design of the campus, and will help the University identify and prioritize future approaches to the elements and systems that collectively create a sustainable 21st century campus, including:

  • Protecting natural systems and reintroducing landscape back into campus open spaces, courtyards, and pathways;

  • Emphasizing the mid-rise scale of the campus for new building projects (additions, renovations, and/or redevelopment)

  • Ensuring future campus buildings and structures promote a ‘light-imprint’ approach to campus ecology and the forest setting;

  • Promoting the year-round campus experience through a greater diversity of campus indoor and outdoor programs and spaces;

  • Considering a campus-wide expansion of recreation and athletics opportunities;

  • Reimagining campus entrances, streets, paths, and trails as a vital, integrated and people-scaled campus network;

  • Balancing all modes of travel to campus with future transit, residence, and parking opportunities; and

  • Creating a safe, accessible, and legible campus through lighting and signage.

The project is ongoing and has an anticipated completion date of Spring 2021.
